In recent years, cultural institutions (community centers, libraries, museums) have used different methods in different extents in order to establish a closer relationship with the addressees of their activities. They have engaged in local matters by engaging citizens in co-creating their offers and strategies. Cultural institutions provide room for citizens to have their say – from proposing ideas for cultural offers, to establishing advisory bodies working under those institutions. Though not all of these ideas succeed, all provide a basis for interesting and viable conclusions.

What is the most important when starting participatory activities in cultural institutions? Why are they worth consideration? Is everything allowed in a museum? Why have the community center’s workers encouraged the citizens to get dirty with paint? Could one talk about culture with regard to class divisions? During this session we would like to provoke answers to these questions, and any other questions from those interested in participating within cultural institutions, especially from people working for such institutions. We shall provide concrete examples and open discussions on challenges arising from such activities.
