Streets should serve the people as a place to spend their time, not only to use them for transportation as it is not
(Ch. Alexander, 1963).
Streets and communication routes can take up to 80% of public space in some cities. Improving the quality of streets is a key aspect in matters like security, local development, and overall quality of life. Many existing roads and streets were planned in the time of a centrally planned economy and were built with different priorities in mind. Therefore, the streets oftentimes do not satisfy the ever-changing communication needs of modern cities and villages. Most of them should be re-designed with the consideration of modern planning standards and the present demands of road users.
The new philosophy for street management requires a more innovative and participatory approach towards road infrastructure planning and designing. Engaging road and street users is a key phase in the process of implementing change.
We shall tell you how to do it and where to begin.
We will explain:
- Who are the road users and what are their needs?
- What are the rules on how to conduct a road dialogue?
- Who, and what, controls the quality of the roads?
