The Community of Finnish Houses in Jazdow, Warsaw – people and space

Moderator: Martyna Cziszewska the Association of Residents of the Finnish Houses in Jazdów and the Department of Landscape Art at Warsaw University of Life Sciences

Time:  2. Day (Friday, May 29.), hrs 0930-1030

Location: II floor, zone I

Format: breakfast meeting

During the session we will be talking about citizens’ influence on the environment they live in.

We will demonstrate the example of the Community of Finnish Houses in Jazdow, Warsaw where we could have observed intensive collaboration among various social actors and strong social activation that directly impacted preserving a valuable region. The unique space around the Community is a large-scale phenomenon. Not only is it remarkable, but most of all the strong locality and personality of this place are worth noticing because of the fact that the first public consultation in Warsaw initiated by the residents took place there. That was the reaction to the decision to liquidate the Community in Jazdow. Not only have the residents of this Community benefited from this reaction, but also it was beneficial to the outsiders engaged in the life of the Community and convinced of its potential.

During the meeting we will demonstrate not only examples of struggle over common areas, but we would like to touch on possibilities and dangers of slow transformation of private-owned areas into public open spaces.

This session is intended for activists working in public open spaces, such as animators, sociologists, architects and designers.
